6mm, 10mm or 15mm: choose your miniature scale

Start with the scale your group already plays. For a new collection, 6mm emphasizes the whole formation, 15mm gives individual models more room to stand out, and 10mm sits between them.

Compare the three options

Formation first

6mm

The smallest option in this range. Useful when you want a formation to read as a whole and want smaller physical models for storage and terrain.

Individual details occupy less space. Check whether the small pieces and painting approach suit you.

The middle option

10mm

A middle ground between miniature footprint and individual-model presence. A useful option when comparing the two extremes.

Confirm that your group and available terrain support it. A nominal scale alone does not guarantee a match across manufacturers.

Model first

15mm

The largest option here. More physical room for paintwork and for individual figures and vehicles to stand out.

Larger models need more storage space. Check unit frontage, terrain clearance and basing before ordering.

Changing model scale does not automatically change a game's movement distances, base sizes or required table size. Follow your chosen rules and agree any changes with your group.

Compare actual model dimensions

A scale label is not the same as total height. These published digital dimensions include attached bases, poses and extending weapons.

X × Y × height in millimeters. Digital model measurements, not physical print measurements.

For example, the 10mm Vanguard Tank is 40.64 mm along its X dimension and 14.22 mm tall. The 10mm Hive Stalkers model is 13.85 mm tall. Neither should be interpreted as a model exactly 10 mm tall.

The catalog labels these ranges approximately 1:285, 1:150 and 1:100 respectively. Use each product's actual dimensions for fit; finished prints may vary slightly during printing and curing. See the full catalog dimension chart.

A practical way to choose

  1. Check your rules and group. Write down the scale, base dimensions and any event restrictions.
  2. Measure what you already own. Compare an infantry figure and a vehicle, including bases and weapons.
  3. Check the models that matter most. A tank footprint can affect terrain fit even when infantry looks right.
  4. Choose your painting and storage priorities. Decide whether formation size or individual-model presence matters more.
  5. Start with a small order. Check physical fit and appearance before committing to a larger force.

If you already collect one of these scales, staying with it is usually the simplest starting point. If you are beginning from scratch, use the comparison above to narrow the choice and ask your group before buying.

Common scale questions

Can I mix different scales?

You can mix models for a display or a custom setting, but do not assume they will share the same proportions or meet a game's requirements. Agree the intended effect and rules with your group first.

Is 15mm easier to paint?

Its larger physical surfaces may be easier for some painters to work on. That does not guarantee a faster paint job: the level of detail you choose to paint makes a difference. Choose based on your own handling and painting preferences.

Which option costs the least?

Compare the current Etsy options for the same product and quantity. Scale, pack contents and shipping can affect the total. This guide does not assume that a single homepage price applies to every scale.

Are the images photographs of actual prints?

The miniature viewers and turntables are digital renders; the Mini Tank Replica page uses a labeled product photograph. Use the dimensions for fit and ask the shop for clarification if you need to confirm a finished-print detail.
